Art Nouveau
1890-1914
Art Nouveau was a completely new philosophy and style of jewelry in which the artistic value of the piece was held paramount to the intrinsic value of the materials; and often had a mystical and exotic flair.
Designers were influenced by Japanese art, which was comprised of very fluid, sinuous lines. Art Nouveau jewelry was very stylized and directly inspired by nature, and often had a mystical and exotic flair. Popular motifs included the female figure, flowers, dragonflies, birds, serpents and insects. Favored materials included a variety of colored gemstones, cabochons, enamel, pearls, opals, and a variety of natural non-precious materials. The Art Nouveau movement in jewelry was led by Rene Lalique.
p.s. I've decided I need one of those folding chairs I mentioned in a previous post. I need something to sit on when I want to eat, read, or knit out on the porch.
